Bush administration officials are under a court order to decide by tomorrow whether to add the polar bear to the list of endangered species. The decision will cap a three-year campaign by environmentalists to show that climate change has the potential to imperil wildlife. Critics say any listing is a bad idea.
Even this short blub also has pro and con stories from NPR listed as related stories.
Many suggest the environmental types are trying to use the polar bear at this point in time as a combination of devotion to the church of global warming and a blocking move for artic drilling since they perceive gas prices may weaken support for drilling exclusions.
I’d now like further argument from MNHawk, or anyone, on how it is mere stupidity behind this idiocy rather than a deliberate course set by those intent on bringing this country to its knees.
Once this is done, there will be NOTHING ANYWHERE beyond the reach of the governments, and the courts, to regulate out of existence, on the grounds that mowing one’s grass in Alabama adds CO2 to the atmosphere, causing the artic ice to shrink, and thereby endangering the bears through loss of their habitat.
Considering the growing Polar Bear population and the bogus stories with questionable photos that have been fisked along the way to here, one would believe that at this point the bears are thriving and not in fact endangered.
It strikes me similar to all the animal impact hogwash that occurred in the run up to construction of the Alaskan pipeline, which was eventually proven to be totally bogus.
It is my understanding that the numbers have shrunk in small location pockets, while growing in great numbers in others...more than enough to make up the difference.
The reasoning behind this insanity is equivalent to doubting humans viability because Detroit has less people today than it did 15 years ago.
Maybe i missed it but i would be interested to know which court issued the order.
Any of you guys who know about the law could maybe enlighten as to the legal implications of this as to whether a court order such as this can be appealed etc.
WASHINGTON (AP)—The Interior Department declared the polar bear a threatened species Wednesday, saying it must be protected because of the decline in Arctic sea ice from global warming....
So the Interior Department did NOT call the polar bear “endangered”, but rather one that we would watch. That’s probably all right, and a step which allows us to see whether the claim is bogus (which it is).
To prevent the environmental lobby from using this listing as a means to prevent domestic energy development Kempthorne proposed a rule to allow this type of activity in the area if it is permissible under standards dictated by the Mammal Protection Act.
This rule has not been adopted.
This decision was spurred by The Center for Biological Diversity, a group that sued the Department of Interior, along with Greenpeace and the Natural Resources Defense Council, to make a decision about listing the polar bear as “endangered” based on global warming concerns. The environmental lobby argues global warming has melted sea ice that polar bears walk on when hunting seals. Less ice, their logic follows, exposes the bears to drowning, cannibalism and starvation.
Their complaints come as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services reports the polar bear population is on the rise. FWS estimates there are currently 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears, up from a record-low population of 5,000 to 10,000 in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
I’d now like further argument from MNHawk, or anyone, on how it is mere stupidity behind this idiocy rather than a deliberate course set by those intent on bringing this country to its knees.
I NEVER blame the people in office, exclusively. Real people, put those in office, that work towards this kind of crap. Which is why I’m always calling them on the IDEAS their cult proclaims. Which is why I never pass up an attempt to mock the Obama Voter. Real people are letting Obama baffle them with bulls@#$, in one end, and expecting him to lower gas prices (because Bush is profiting directly from them) on the other.
Maybe Raptivio can provide further insight into his cult. Maybe Raptavio can settle once and for all, what he expects out of Obama and his cult.
A. Gas prices to $10 and beyond is a good thing, and we’ll do everything we can, to get them there. We we actually run on, is another thing. Ya gotta do, what ya gotta do, with getting as many rubes into my cult as possible. Baffle ‘em with bulls@#t.
or
B. I really expect My Messiah to lower gas prices by putting polar bears on the endangered list. I expect them to go lower when the windfall profits tax is implemented on the price of a barrel of oil. Futher reductions will occur when carbon cap and trade is implemented. And I’m sure electricity will remain plentiful as we outlaw all new coal plants.
I suppose choice A would be purposeful, and choice B would be just plain stupidity.
Not being familiar with the whole species balance up there , but I would hope that if the population levels off or goes down that someone will look to see if they have grown far enough to outstrip their natural food supply.
The PL guys themselves chip in on the issue with a post and have a good review by Hugh Hewitt on the far reaching impacts of this ruling today that impacts many things down here in the lower 48.
Unfortunately this has nothing to do with Polar Bears. It is simply the acquisition and exercise of more power by the government pushed by people using the environmental movement to accomplish it. The environmental movement is now the vehicle for those who hate freedom and capitalism and want government control over more and more of our lives.
When I was in Yuma, the Defenders of the Wildlife conducted a 10 year campaign to place the Horny Toad Lizard on the Endangered Species List. Their “argument” was that Marine Corps tanks, and other such “instruments of war” were running over the last remaining pocket of Horny Toads. The truth was that this was an attempt to shut down a military training range.
A federal judge ordered this species be placed on the Threatened List while evaluations were conducted.
MILLIONS of dollars were spent in endless statistical studies with field work conducted by grad students from across the U.S. Each year, results of Marine Corps training ops and the impact on this species were inconclusive. At the same time, results displayed a correlation between a decrease in the sample Horny Toad population and a subsequent increase in the Leopard Lizard population.
We had a lazy ass GS 11 on staff who’s sole responsibility was to drive out to the range, note the time, temp and other environmental conditions, and to count live lizards and their locations, and squished (or eaten) lizards and their locations.
Despite the left’s best efforts, science eventually debunked these claims SO the Horny Toad was taken off the Threatened Species list, and returned to the “just another desert critter” list. For some idea of similar tactics in this area of the U.S., google “Imperial Sand Dunes” and “milk vetch”.
I suspect if the Polar Bear Gambit fails, the left will launch the Timmy the Fox ploy.
Hugh Hewitt--as far as I know, the only person so far to blow the whistle on the liberals’ scam--explains the legal consequences....
Aahhh, no.
Jim Quinn, of the War Room, and Mark Levin have been broadcasting the alarm for weeks now.
Come to think of it, every time you breathe you emit carbon dioxide which, according to the wackos, “endangers” the polar bear. Good thing you don’t (yet) need a permit to breathe; so far, it’s only the economy that is in danger of being killed off.
Yeah, “only”.
And....I pointed out early on the danger of declaring CO2 a pollutant simply because that IS what humans exhale.
From Hugh Hewitt:
Thus any lease of federal land and any federal highway project will be the target of the advocates for urgent reduction in carbon emissions. They will argue that courts must immediately enjoin any federal permit unless and until the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service or the National Marine Fisheries Service has reviewed the permit and suggested mitigations --including redesign or compensatory carbon offsets. The avalanche of lawsuits waiting in the wings all come with the promise of attorneys fees awards as well, guaranteeing that the FESA litigation cycle will never end.
It won’t stop with federal permits. Wait for the first lawsuits against Weber barbeque grills, Deere equipment, any and all auto companies.
