It was already shaping up to be a difficult year for congressional Republicans. Now, on the cusp of Mother’s Day, comes this: A majority of the House GOP has voted against motherhood.
On Wednesday afternoon, the House had just voted, 412 to 0, to pass H. Res. 1113, “Celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals of Mother’s Day,” when Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.), rose in protest.
“Mr. Speaker, I move to reconsider the vote,” he announced.
Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.), who has two young daughters, moved to table Tiahrt’s request, setting up a revote. This time, 178 Republicans cast their votes against mothers.
It has long been the custom to compare a popular piece of legislation to motherhood and apple pie. Evidently, that is no longer the standard. Worse, Republicans are now confronted with a John Kerry-esque predicament: They actually voted for motherhood before they voted against it.
Republicans, unhappy with the Democratic majority, have been using such procedural tactics as this all week to bring the House to a standstill, but the assault on mothers may have gone too far. House Minority Leader John Boehner, asked yesterday to explain why he and 177 of his colleagues switched their votes, answered: “Oh, we just wanted to make sure that everyone was on record in support of Mother’s Day.”

I can’t disagree that the rest of the article reads like your typical ‘hurr republicans have teh bad ethics hurr’ hit piece but you have to admit the whole 178 House Repubs voting against motherhood is pretty funny.
Especially in that they voted for it before they voted against it.
The resolution praising mothers on Mother’s Day was passed on a UC. How ever, the repubs are in favor of wasting time and then claiming the dem controlled congress can’t get anything done. Hence, the two yr record for filibusters was broken in one yr by Senate republicans.
So after the resolution is passed in the house by UC, Rep Tiarhrt calls for a roll call vote as well. Rep Kastor moved to table the request, by UC I imagine. But the repubs objected and a roll call vote was mandated. The house repubs clicked their heels and obeyed Blunt’s call to waste time.
As if Pelosi has been scheduling legislation at a breakneck speed.
Here in southern California the mood was like a bombed city. People staggered down the sidewalks. Children were crying. I saw small knots of people staring at CSPAN in storefronts, grim-faced, watching Congress vote down motherhood. In yard after yard I saw grills and picnic tables set up but no food and nobody outside laughing. Carrows and Marie Callendars were dark, the staff was out on the sidewalk staring at the empty parking lot crying into their aprons. For I don’t know how many decades we leaned on Congress to make Mother’s Day go, and they let us down. DAMN YOU REPUBLICANS!!!
Your doctor just called Vlad, he said your meds need adjusting.
Why is he calling you? What meds are you on?
Simple historical fact: the Republicans broke the record for filibusters in this session.
Simple historical fact: the Republicans allowed themselves to be maneuvered into voting against Mother’s Day, for crying in a bucket. By the less-than-competent Democrats! I don’t need any more meds, I need a glass of champagne to celebrate kicking these GOP buffoons out of power.
Just for fun, it would be nice to see some specifics on the stalling tactics of both parties over the last seven years. Do we start with filibuster minutes, pointless resolutions, or any number of foot-dragging tactics that many of us may never even heard of?
But the title of this thread is great; it has such an authentically Powerline tone.

So you are on record now as not being against the TACTIC (since the Dems wasted time when the Republicans were in power in Congress)? You are only against the Republicans being BETTER at it than the Dems (i.e., wasting MORE time)?

Honestly, Oscar, have you ever thought of running for Congress? As a Republican?
Did I ever say a hint of a word about whether I was for against the TACTIC? And what “record” are you talking about?
