I was thinking of my Dad the other day and about what fun we used to have sitting around listening to his record collection.  I decided you can’t get that character sound and feel from digital so I am going to start my very own vinyl collection.  Here are some albums I am going to start with.

I would love to hear some suggestions on other real good classic rock or folk albums.  I have already bought “Spirit of America” and enjoyed the heck out of it.  Some of the local record shops have great deals on old vinyl.

I’ve given away most of my 400+ vinyl collection the past few years.  Just got tired of lugging them around.

I bought a Harmon-Kardon tube-type tuner, a separate H-K tube type receiver, Jensen TX-5 speakers, and a sherwood turntable - all purchased in 1962 for $1,100. I passed up the AR-3 speakers ‘cause the magnet in the Jensen’s was about 2 lbs heavier. One of my reare really good decisions.

A new loaded VW back then was $990.  My friends thought I was nuts.  I had them until they gave out a couple of years back.

People who heard it just marvelled at the difference in the sound!
It was caused by the superior processing of the sound by the turntable stylus and the old tubes.

I tried a BO (Bang and Olufsen) system for a month, but the digital processing makes my records sound so flat.  So, I got an old turntable from a radio station and had it refurbished.  It’s an 18” platter and has an adjustablel speed control.  I can’t even find a reliable tube type amp.  They try on EBay every now and then, but I’m leary. I’m hoping to find an old McIntosh one day, though.

I’ve got several hundred albums, including the Beatle White Album, and “The Jimi Hendrix Experience”, the original release of Purple haze.  I even have “Steam“‘s only album.  Every football fan knows their hit: na-na NAAA-NA—hey-hey --goodbye...

My first stereo album (heck it was the FIRST stereo album sold at retail was by Bob and Ray.  We used to listed as the fly buzzed from speaker to speaker until the jet airplane it morphed into screamed across the room!  If I’d have charged $1 for everyone who came to my house to listen I’d have never had to go to work!

The Quadraphonic system I bought overseas in 1974:

Kenwood 4-channel amp / receiver
Dual 1228 turntable
Akai 4-channel reel to reel
Sansui SP 7500x Speakers that were never sold in America because they weigh 55 lbs EACH!
Koss 4-channel head phones.

Unfortunately ...

Quadraphonic didn’t last long because it was soooo expensive.  They didn’t even make many albums in anticipation that it would never catch on.

Pink Floyd in 4-channel was the bees knees.  ALL of their concerts were / are presented in surround sound - WAY before their time!

Keep in mind that you can transfer the “character sound and feel” to a digital format.

I have an extensive collection of vinyl that I have digitally copied unaltered. Playback on the computer sounds exactly same as on the turntable. Scratches. Pops. Nearly all of the nuances are captured.

That is pretty neat vegas.  It really does not change a thing with the sound?  I think I will stick to my Dad’s old record player he gave me...it brings back good memories when I clean the needle.  How much do one of those digital record player doohickies cost bye the way?

I would be sold if they could make some kind of smello vision too LOL.  I love the old paper and ink smell the record jackets give off.  It would be pretty cool to load up my Zune with a bunch of unaltered music.  $200 is a pretty good deal in this day and age.  I may have to check that out.  I talked to my Dad last night and he said if I wanted a few of his collection I could have it...turns out he has some good stuff in his private collection worth some big bucks.  Something about the color of the indentifying marks on the records, stamps I think he said.  He never let me play with them because I was too young.  He said I was old enough know...I just said thanks Dad. <chuckle>
Is that something I should research...the stamps and such...I have never really collected much but I am pretty interested in collecting some vinyl.

Most of my collection I acquired from my folks. Some of the stuff is older than me! All the more reason for me to record them and store them.

I travel to California about once a month. During those trips my IPOD is loaded with about fifty or so (vinyl) albums that I recorded. Nothing beats it.

Great so it does work with MP3 players.  That is a selling point for me right there.

In addition to the new USB turntables that you can plug directly into your computer, several companies still make vinyl LPs.

The best-known is Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs, fondly known as Mo-Fi, which has been around for decades. They recently reissued some of the early Santana records on LP. They ain’t cheap, though. As I recall they are $25 to $30 apiece.

Another good one is Sundazed, which has also done LP reissues of classic ‘60’s stuff like The Byrds.

And if you want to buy used vinyl, go to your newstand and find a copy of Goldmine. If they don’t have it, ask them to special order it for you.
