FRED THOMPSON:
This is a battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party and its future. On the one hand, you have the Reagan revolution. You have the Reagan coalition of limited government and strong national security.

On the other hand, you have the direction that Governor Huckabee would take us in. He would be a Christian leader, but he would also bring about liberal economic policies, liberal foreign policies. He believes we have an arrogant foreign policy and the tradition of, blame America first. He believes that Guantanamo should be closed down and those enemy combatants brought here to the United States to find their way into the court system eventually. He believes in taxpayer-funded programs for illegals, as he did in Arkansas. He has the endorsement of the National Education Association, and the NEA said it was because of his opposition to vouchers. He said he would sign a bill that would ban smoking nationwide. So much for federalism. So much for states’ rights. So much for individual rights.

That’s not the model of the Reagan coalition, that’s the model of the Democratic Party.

I’m so tired of Fred Thompson.  I know he’s been out of the game for a while but in case he forgot we already have liberal economic policies in place.  Prescription drug coverage and No Child Left Behind are just two of the worst examples.  Thompson talks about liberal foreign policies?  We’re in the middle of the costliest kind of liberal foreign policy (i.e. nation building) since WWII.

Nevertheless, I’ll try to answer his criticisms.

Governors have to govern.  It’s a simple fact that they represent 100% of the people and not just the percent who voted in favor.  That said, Huckabee spent tax dollars on things that give people opportunities to succeed.  He spent money to educate people so they can learn and become more productive citizens.  He spent money on roads and infrastructure so people and businesses can move goods and services efficiently and effectively.  These two things are essential for a community/state/nation to improve.  Government ought to provide people opportunities to better their lives.  It’s why I think libraries are essential for a community.  It gives everyone access to bettering their lives.

As for Thompson’s critique of education dollars going to the children of illegal immigrants (who, if born here, are citizens) then I agree with Huckabee that we shouldn’t punish kids for what their parents did.  Additionally, we’re a nation hungry for highly-skilled workers.  So if we can create an opportunity for someone to better their lives and improve our nation, while simultaneously helping that person assimilate into the great American melting pot - I’m in favor.  By the way, I’m pretty sure Reagan would have sided with Huckabee on this one.

Huckabee didn’t say ‘we’ have an arrogant foreign policy.  He said this administration has an arrogant approach to foreign policy.  Having voted for the President twice (and attending the second inaugural) I tend to agree.  The Bush administration has always carried itself with a degree of arrogance.  The insular circle of advisers and demands of loyalty always struck me as a poor way to manage.  Rumsfeld’s refusing to listen to his generals in the start-up of the war as they asked for more troops.  The foreign policy game has always been played a little differently.  There’s a history and culture to statecraft that is honored and respected by those on the inside.  Bush refused to play by declaring that you’re either with us or against us.  Granted, it’s wholly within his right to do so, but it was an arrogant move.  And nowhere has Huckabee ‘blamed America first’.  That’s a cowardly sound-bite and nothing more.

I don’t know what should be done with Guantanamo.  The decision is not as easy as either side portrays.

There’s a tremendous amount of sense to a national smoking ban.  The Republican Governor of Minnesota (and likely McCain VP) signed a bill banning smoking in public places.  On average, the typical smoker is poorer and less well-educated.  On average, the poorer and less-educated end up on public health care assistance.  If we can limit the number of smokers who use government run health care then we can reduce the amount of money taxpayers are forced to shell out each year.  Although, I’m sympathetic to Thompson’s federalism argument.

But let’s not get carried away with these appeals to Reagan’s legacy.  It was never as pure as Thompson thinks.  Huckabee’s for an effective government and strong national defense.  He’s got a record of success and a personality that’s appealing.  Is Huckabee the best Republican?  No.  Of the top five candidates, he’s better than the rest and he’s my choice.

Is Ron Carey writing this?

Bottomline, Huckabee argued for giving illegals in-state tuition at state universities, a boon not available to poor U.S. citizens residing outside of Arkansas. He didn’t get his way but that doesn’t change the fact he supported it. He’s now talking tougher on immigration and I don’t believe a word of it.
He won’t answer straight questions about his record and acts offended that anyone brings it up. He’s running a dishonest, stealth campaign like another governor from Arkansas.
He supports nanny state solutions like the smoking ban. I’m not a smoker but neither do I support such massive government intrusion into what is a personal decision. As long as they aren’t blowing smoke in other people’s faces, it’s nobody business where a smoker lights up in public.
Huckabee would lose the general election in McGovern like numbers.
That, we don’t need.

If the Republican party nominates Huckabee for President it will be a low point in Republican history. Evangelicals are shooting themselves in the foot by pouring all their power into electing a candidate that is soooooo weak on most conservative issues.

I’m from Arkansas and believe me when I say that if you want a Nanny-state leader, you’ve got him in Huckabee. He lost weight and suddenly he felt he had to over our lives for our own good and force his ideas of a healthy lifestyle on us. Gone were the salt shakers at school. Every student had to have a body mass index taken and mailed home. This was a horrible experience for many young and vulnerable girls. To have their parents receive an official government document claiming their daughter was obese, or borderline obese, or etc, etc. We received one on my 15 year old son who was 5 foot 8, an athletic basketball player, weight of 150 and it said he was borderline obese. We had a good laugh, but how many selfconcious girls found it a laughing matter? His goal of trying to get us healthier was not a bad goal, but his way of making government the way to force us into it is what is so worrying to me.

Remember he left the ministry to get to where he could do the real work he feels needs to be done. In his mind, he can use government to make us toe the line and do what is good for us.

If Huckabee is our nominee I will sit out an election for the first time ever. And don’t lecture me about the need for a pro-life candidate to be elected. Huckabee would have very limited ability to make changes there. His role would be to nominate strict constructionist judges, but I believe he would let his desire to elect judges that would make government more powerful overcome that requirement. And on the other issues he would be as liberal and weak as Obama and Hillary.

A sorry cast of candidates truly.  I’m a Rudy guy, but disappointed in his pathetic strategy.  Which can only mean he doesn’t deserve it.

Dems will win this in a landslide.

There are many Americans just now starting to pay attention to the candidates. There are many that pay very little attention to what is really going on politically. Too many of us are sound bite listeners and headline only readers. There are many who don’t vote and pay nearly no attention to politics. They are envolved with very few people outside of a few close friends who are mostly like them. THESE TYPES OF PEOPLE ARE THE TARGETS OF PEOPLE LIKE MR. HUCKABEE!!!

They are “easy takes”. Their depth of knowledge of the world around them is shallow and narrow. And that is their choice. There are some who have one foot in the local church--sometimes. Their ministers lay a little guilt on them, and they fall lockstep to the precinct and vote for Huckabee. It is the absolute easist and most productive manner to acguire votes there is!! It’s “god’s will”, so, thy will be done!

Mr. Huckabee easily rules over their intellect because he connects with them with his nice guy, I’m just like your neighbors kind of person. He’s warm and fuzzy and talks country and southeren and bible. Mr. Huckabee knows the formula, knows how to work it, and knows how to dodge and avoid those who would engage him in an intelligent and shed-the-light-on-the-truth kind of way. He turns on the charm and runs the clock out, never to be confronted with who he really IS based on HIS record. He is clever with his humor and selfrighteously beyond reproach (about his record).

He is a confidence man (CON MAN) to the hilt. He has an appetite for freebies, handouts, gifts, money and legal but unethical laws, uses of power and pressure on people he wants to control. And uses the most basic tools of sofistry--God and “His will”.

FOR #15...the ev. Christian…
Unfortunately, most christians with brains like you are not in the majority. Your call on the “who” Huckabee IS, is accurate. I really love religious people who know Thomas Jefferson was a religious man. He too could see through the phony religious angles used by the Huckabees of the world. They branded him a heretic.

others… see #15’s comments in signature area.

Thanks to all--especially #15!!

For #9 April

Everybody has a bank of knowledge like Swiss Cheese. We have holes in what we know as well as what we think we know and there’s only 24 hrs in a day after all--we are a work in progress. So, #9 don’t feel bad about the following:

a·ris·to·crat (-rst-krt, rs-)
n.
1. A member of a ruling class or of the nobility.
2. A person having the tastes, manners, or other characteristics of the aristocracy: a natural aristocrat who insists on the best accommodations.
3. A person who advocates government by an aristocracy.
4. One considered the best of its kind: the aristocrat of cars.

Dear April,

Mitt Romney doesn’t even drive the cars of the aristocracy of Europe and other non-USA countries. He isn’t in our USA “royal” or Kennedy/Rockefeller-esque families. George Romney, Mitt’s dad made good despite the fact he didn’t have a college degree and was a poor Mormon boy who left Utah soon after his mother died. If you like the Barry Goldwater family story, you’ll appreciate the George Romney family story. George was noted as a hard working family man. The ten years before he ran for Gov of Michagan were George’s best financial years. He averaged $275,000 per year working for the firm eventually called American Motors (not amongst the big 3 automakers).

So, the very, very big dollars were never his, but he did become a millionaire. Mitt’s inheritance from his Dad was given to charity. Mitt Romney had already made much of his fortune by that time--didn’t need it. Both men raised their sons to never loose the common touch. They both lived below their means-- such as cars super large homes etc. When you do further investigation about Mitt Romney you’ll find he kept his cars (stationwagons) until they were about to die. He is even known to go to movies with homemade popcorn. His frugalness is comically legendary amongst his co-workers and partners. The same goes for his brainpower and creativity, his hard work ethic, generosity and impecible integrity in business. The man has very loyal friends and co-workers of both political partys. Many say they would follow him anywhere he led them. One story by the son of a former partner (and democrat) was about Mitt’s ability to admitt he was wrong--ya really!

As you investigate Mitt Romney’s life and acheivements remember that he is the #1 most feared candidates of the DNC. So, be wise not to be taken in by liberal name callers and liars from the DNC and the MSM. No matter if you ever support MR or not, your reading about his life and accomplishment will be mind blowing and extraordinary. He is a legend in his business industry! His business accomplishments, techniques, and Olympic turnaround are part of the current Harvard MBA curriculum. His 14 years at Bain Capital averaged a yearly return of 113%. Not 13%, truly 113% per year each and every year of the 14 years he was at the helm of Bain Capital. He worked on over 160 troubled or start-up companies--all successfully! When you read about the “Bain Way” and more of the rest of the stories you’ll be amazed even more! Look up the word singularity. Mitt Romney as a candidate for POTUS compared to candidates over the last 150 years and now is a singularity!

JohnHoo, thank you much for this information.  I was not aware of any of it and will check further into Mitt Romney’s bio.

April #9 will aggravate you until you’d prefer to poke your eyes out rather than have to deal with its contradictory drivel.

Welcome to PL Forum.
